The Chicago Bar Association (CBA), located in Chicago, Illinois has a varied cohort of employees ranging from young, healthy employees to older employees. For at least 15 years, they were a fully insured Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) customer, but like most BCBS clients, they were facing increasing costs every year. The CBA's renewal date was fast approaching, and they were finding it challenging to cope with the rising costs.

This case study follows a Chicago-based company that switched from a fully insured ACA plan to a level-funded plan due to rising healthcare costs. However, a high claims year forced them to switch back to their previous plan. After identifying the cause of these high claims, they were able to switch back to a level-funded plan with the same healthcare cost savings they initially experienced.
